Icy blue and  fluffy coats! This was one of my favorite collections this season. That shade of blue in the in the second photos is pretty divine! Designer Nicolas Ghesquière used manipulated material creating perforated fabrics, cashmere to look like foam, and fur shaved into quilting (gives me an idea for all the fallen cat fur I collect! Don’t judge! I’m saving it to make a Mr.Marmar sweater one day). I wonder how you can make cashmere look like foam. Although it sounds and probably looks cool, I would feel so bad for effing with such a luxurious piece of knitwear. I give Balenciaga two thumbs up for the attention to new experimental materials whilst creating a beautiful collection.

Balenciaga’s Resort 2010 collection has less than 30 looks and had more that 20 looks would personally wear. That’s pretty good considering a lot of designers design a few cool pieces per season and the rest seem like ‘fillers’ to me. This is the Resort collection, so for all us little people, it’s the clothes that rich people wear when they are vacationing on a yacht or somewhere glamorous like that. Vacations at Lake Tahoe don’t count as a glamorous destination to wear these. Sorry, people. Anyway, here are a few of my favorite looks from this collection. I love ruffles! It’s so doll-like! The last photo is like Paul Bunyan and Queen Elizabeth’s spawn after a few Old Milwaukee Beers. Genius!

Nicolas Ghesquière’s collection for Balenciaga Fall 2009 was something out of a more glamourous era, without too costume-y. Completely wearable without  looking like a sideshow, Balenciaga is quickly making it’s move up my ‘fashion designers I  love’ list. (I also have a sh*t list- but that’s another day , people!) With a Parisian flair, sumptuous fabrics were draped elegantly without hiding the woman’s shape. The touch to detail , down to the flocked stockings (which I must whip out one of these days from my archived stocking drawer)  and the strong shoulders resonated back to the 1940s and the 1980s. This is how it’s done.

Nicolas Ghesquière’s designs for Balenciaga reminded me of iridescent fish scales. I like the color pallet of lavenders, silvers, and white. It’s sort of techy at the same time. The silhouette reminds of those 1980’s acid wash denim party dresses you find at the Salvation Army today. Overall, I found the collection not as exciting as his past collections. There’s always next season…
