Reminscent of other Japanese designers like Comme Des Garçon, Tao unveiled its spring 2011 collection with  mostly simple white and black ensembles embellished with ruffles. There was an air of the Victorian era with the neck ruffs and knickers. There were also doody hair dos- no! kidding… they were elongated chignons…. yeah, that’s it. Anyway, I can see myself wearing these, especially the knicker outfit during a leisure walk through a meadow (when does that ever happen?)

Before we start, when I was a kid I used to stick pillows underneath my clothes and pretend I was pregnant and/or fat. Yes, I was the poster child for ‘Not Right’. Anyway, when I saw this collection it brought me back to those days. This isn’t shocking compared to the ‘Bubble Butt’ collection that Rei Kawakubo put out in 1996. She focused on ‘deformities’ and the natural body. Quasimodo is basically her muse.  At least, these dresses will save you from a few bruises if you trip like a fool. I’m in the mood for marshmallows all of a sudden.

Okay. I know Comme des Garçon has fupe designs to begin with, so I’ve already factored that into my expectations. But, this looks like something I would’ve put together when was really bored in my dad’s closet…. when I was 9.  The only one I would wear without shame would be the first photo of the ‘nightgown trench coat’. I actually like that because since I like to ‘pull Michael Jacksons (RIP)‘ (wearing pajama’s in public with an over-coat over it and pretend nobody sees the bottom of my pajama pants) this would be perfect. Yes, I dress dreadfully when I become lazy. Moving on, the face on the last model says it all- ‘I hope the shadow from this FUG wig covers my face so no one knows it’s me’.

Rei Kawakubo was in rare form this season by designing pieces  for Comme des Garçon that you can actually wear on the street and not be mistaken for a hobo. Honestly, Rei has surprised me with this collection. Granted, when you look above there is all sorts of fupeness, but if you take it piece by piece, you may be able to actually wear it in public! The veiled models walked with Geisha inspired candy colored hair. My favorite is the trompe l’oiel military jacket. It reminds me of the Moschino trench coat from Kill Bill worn by Daryl Hannah. The nude, gossamer fabrics are quite gorgeous, too. Although the plaid blanket is going the hobo way- fight it , Rei!… fight the hobo look….

I love the tulle and organza egg dress, reminds me of the Japanese designer like Rei Kawakubo of Comme des Garcon and Bjork’s favorite Hussein Chalayan.  I would wear this if I didn’t have to sit in it.
