No, I’m not talking about that cobbler with a closet for a store that smells like feet and leather. I’m talking about Swedish fashion house Fifth Avenue Shoe Repair. They design pretty laid back clothes, but their couture collection, “By the No” (I have no idea what that means, I was lost at Fifth Avenue Shoe Repair, but stay with me anyway) is pretty cool. My favorite is the brown leather corset with the tumor on the hip. It looks like The Elephant Man meets Steampunk. It could also pass for those padded monstrosities by Rei Kawakubo. In any case, I like Fifth Avenue Shoe Repair, however, I still have no idea where they got their name. If you know, please let me know because it’s the kind of stuff that I lose sleep over. Like it runs through my mind until I fall asleep. I need HELP! Solve this mystery for me!

Before we start, when I was a kid I used to stick pillows underneath my clothes and pretend I was pregnant and/or fat. Yes, I was the poster child for ‘Not Right’. Anyway, when I saw this collection it brought me back to those days. This isn’t shocking compared to the ‘Bubble Butt’ collection that Rei Kawakubo put out in 1996. She focused on ‘deformities’ and the natural body. Quasimodo is basically her muse.  At least, these dresses will save you from a few bruises if you trip like a fool. I’m in the mood for marshmallows all of a sudden.

Rei Kawakubo was in rare form this season by designing pieces  for Comme des Garçon that you can actually wear on the street and not be mistaken for a hobo. Honestly, Rei has surprised me with this collection. Granted, when you look above there is all sorts of fupeness, but if you take it piece by piece, you may be able to actually wear it in public! The veiled models walked with Geisha inspired candy colored hair. My favorite is the trompe l’oiel military jacket. It reminds me of the Moschino trench coat from Kill Bill worn by Daryl Hannah. The nude, gossamer fabrics are quite gorgeous, too. Although the plaid blanket is going the hobo way- fight it , Rei!… fight the hobo look….

The International Center of Photography just opened four exhibitions to inaugurate their “2009 Year of Fashion,” including the contemporary Weird Beauty: Fashion Photography Now. Check it out if you’re in NYC:

I love the tulle and organza egg dress, reminds me of the Japanese designer like Rei Kawakubo of Comme des Garcon and Bjork’s favorite Hussein Chalayan.  I would wear this if I didn’t have to sit in it.
